Day 13: John 13

Choose love

1 Before the Passover celebration, Jesus knew that his hour had come to leave this world and return to his Father. He had loved his disciples during his ministry on earth, and now he loved them to the very end. 2 It was time for supper, and the devil had already prompted Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus.3 Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from God and would return to God. 4 So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him.
John 13:1-5 (NLT)

What an amazing chapter! Oh to have been a fly on that upper room wall and to have witnessed Jesus’s final hours with His disciples before the crucifixion. In this upper room, He is going to give them the final instructions: Love as I have loved you, this is the example I have set for you, do likewise, I am going to the cross but do not let your heart be troubled, if the world hated me it will hate you.

The scriptures tell us He knew He had come from God and would return to God. In other words, Jesus knew who He was, where He had come from, and where He was going. Because of these three things, Jesus knew He would go on to do seven things.

He would be:

  1. betrayed

  2. abandoned

  3. lied about

  4. ridiculed

  5. beaten

  6. scourged

  7. crucified

Yet Jesus chose all of the above to love people.

Oh what a Savior! Oh what an example! My prayer for us in 2018 is that we would be so rooted and grounded in our spiritual identity with Jesus that no matter what happens, we could grow in love.

Our Prayer

Lord Jesus, I am in awe of your overwhelming love for me. As I look through your Word and see you knew the suffering you'd face on my behalf, I want to live up to Your example. Jesus, no matter what happens to me in this life, help me to be so rooted in You that I grow in love for Your glory and to spread Your kingdom on Earth. In Your name, amen!
